Common Boating Terms

Bow   The front of a boat.
Stern   Rear or backend of a boat.
Port   Left side of a boat when facing the bow.
Starboard   Right side of a boat when facing the bow.
Forward   The front of the bow area.
Aft   The stern area of the boat.
Above Deck   On the deck of the boat.
Below Deck   Below the deck of the boat, typically cabin space.
Dead Ahead   Any point in which a vessel is approaching directly on a straight course.
Onboard   On the boat, as in "the fishing gear is onboard."
Helm   The steering wheel of the boat.
Pilot House   An area below deck, together with the helm, where the navigation equipment is located.
Fly Bridge   An additional steering station above deck, usually open with outside seating.
Galley   The kitchen on a boat.
Salon   A boat's living room.
Head   The bathroom on a boat.
Berth   A boat's bed or sleeping area.
V-Berth   A forward cabin, v-shaped, typically conforming to the shape of the boat's bow.
